The benefits of using Smart Objects can be summed up in one word: flexibility. Since the Smart Ob-
ject is an instanced version of an image, you can scale, filter, update, or modify the Smart Object
without changing the original file and without losing any of the resolution detail or quality.

Once you have a mask on a layer, you can easily paint to reveal or hide parts of the layer by switching
between black and white in your color picker. As long as the mask exists, your options are endless.
