Jim's Gems
by Jim Korkis
Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano was originally supposed to be an interactive res-
taurant called The Great Gonzo's Pizza Pandemonium Parlor run by Gonzo and Rizzo
the Rat from Jim Henson's Muppets who would make appearances along with other
Muppets during the dining experience. When Jim Henson passed away May 1990, the
final contracts allowing the Disney Company to acquire the Muppets franchise were
never completed. Many Muppets-related projects, including this one, were cancelled.
Instead, the Imagineers developed a back story of a fictional young girl who came to
Hollywood to open an authentic Italian restaurant to feed the movie stars.
Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater
Streets of America, near ABC Commissary
CUISINE American. HOURS 12pm-park close. DDP Yes. DISCOUNTS 20% TiW.
PRICES Lunch/Dinner Appetizers: $6-$11; Entrees: $14-$32. Kids : $9.
OVERVIEW Diners sit inside classic car-shaped booths at this indoor “drive-in theater” while
old black-and-white movie clips, trailers, and commercials play on a large movie screen
ahead. Above, the ceiling is lit up like the night sky, complete with twinkling stars. The
menu offers several sandwiches and burgers under $16 all day, making this a great value
out-of-pocket at dinner. The more expensive steak ($32) and chicken pasta ($24) don't offer
as much value. The restaurant is dark, but kids usually love the carhop shtick and campy
clips on screen. Kids' meal choices include grilled salmon, cheeseburgers, popcorn chick-
en, and pasta.
From May 4 through June 14, Sci-Fi hosts a Star Wars -themed breakfast hosted by Darth
Vader and Boba Fett with in-restaurant appearances by Stormtropers, Greedo, and Jawas.
The cost is $50 for adults and $32 for kids or two credits on the Disney Dining Plan.
Dining at Magic Kingdom
Three of the most popular restaurants in all of Walt Disney World are found within Magic
Kingdom. Overwhelmingly the most popular is the enchanting Be Our Guest Restaurant.
Not only does it serve upscale, French-inspired fare at (relatively) reasonable prices, but
it's also the first (and only) place at the Magic Kingdom to offer wine or beer with dinner.
The restaurant operates as a quick service for lunch, serving from 10:30am to 2:30pm daily.
It's currently the only quick service that not only accepts reservations 180 days in advance,
but largely requires them if you'd like to dine. They do accept a limited number of walkups
if you're unable to secure a reservation, particularly after 2pm. If you're interested in re-
serving lunch, do so as early as possible.
