In-Depth Information
illustrates a video 'block-by-block' coverage of streets indicated on the accompanying map.
Buttons and slide bars with functions that cater for fast-forward, fast rewind and pauses can
control videos. The video package uses standard QuickTime controllers. This sample page
shows a typical video page for one of the blocks of the township. The Web page contains a
location map, showing this particular block as a green dot and the other blocks with movies
as a red dot. Clicking the red dot associated with that a particular block can access other
blocks.
The use of the Theatre metaphor involves functionality and thus allows the user to be
engaged/pleased with the experience. This means that the user must understand the activ-
ity well enough to do something. Some users may prefer this type of 'discovery' activity
to traditional human-computer interface methods. This metaphor enables everyday ac-
tivities, life in general and items specific to certain problems to be depicted. The Theatre
metaphor (Figure 6.9) allows users to explore the township. It provides an insight into the
Township of Queenscliff and an overview of the Stage (the township and Port Phillip Bay),
the Cast (buildings and the infrastructure of the township) and the Script (elements that
impose upon and affect changes to both the Stage and how the Cast exist or function on
that Stage).
Once the user moves to the Theatre, two sets of QuickTime movies are available: an
overview of the township through two movies taken from the lighthouse in the centre
of Fort Queenscliff; and two movies taken from Port Phillip Bay showing the lighthouses
and the lifeboat shed and pier. Both videos show Queenscliff via the Theatre metaphor.
Figure 6.10(a) is the overview of the township. The two QuickTime movies are looped,
but users can stop playback using the standard controls. Figure 6.10(b) illustrates the
views from Port Phillip Bay. These videos operate in the same manner as those of the
Township.
