ensure their use. The maps here only show the world re-shaped so that area is in proportion
to the number of times young women use a condom when having sex with someone they
are not living with or are not married to. It is a map of protected sex outside marriage or
co-habitation (this includes infidelity). Its inverse - soon to appear on the website - will be
of the world shaped by sex that is unprotected by polyurethane or fidelity.
Text Box 5.11: Condom Use by Women
Condoms (including female condoms) are the only contraceptive that also provides the
users with protection from sexually transmitted infections (STI). It is sensible for some-
one to use a condom if they have sex with a person who they are not certain does not
have any infections. Often people are themselves unaware of whether they have an STI.
This map shows the distribution of young women who did use a condom last time
they had 'high-risk' sex. That is sex with someone they are not married to or do not
live with. Not everyone has access to condoms, can demand their use or wants to use
them. Only 40% of young women around the world used condoms the last time they
had risky sex.
In many societies, it is taboo even at home to speak about sexual matters, sexual
choices and sexual diseases

5.2.11 Agricultural women
Some 282 million women work as farmers worldwide. The world shaped by the sum
of their labours sees the Americas thin whilst Southern and Eastern Asia bulge. It is a
world where there are few tractors (Worldmapper Map 121), let alone combine-harvesters,
