per person in France, Japan, Singapore, the UK and the United States; 23-27 per cent of

Text Box 5.10: Condom Use by Men
Of all the older boys and younger men in the world, 47% report having used a condom
at the last time of high-risk sex. The region with the highest condom use is North
America, at 63.5%. The lowest condom use is in the Middle East at 36.8%. Male and
female condom use is not the same for several reasons. Homosexual sex disconnects
figures for men and women. Also, many men might sleep with the same women, whilst
other women do not have 'high-risk' sex. This is particularly the case because female
prostitution is more common than male prostitution. There are also reporting biases.
When condoms are expensive, the costs of sexual freedom can be very high
(Dan Smith, 2003)
5.2.10 Condom use by women
The map of condom use by young women is not quite the same shape as that of use by
young men. This despite the fact that usually one condom is shared between a woman and
a man! Other times condoms will just be used between men, and sometimes shared just by
women (these uses being solely concerned with protecting sexual health). Where education
is poor, especially the education of young women, contraception use tends to be poorer.
This is due to both lack of access to contraceptives and not being empowered enough to
Figure 5.12 Territory size shows the proportion of all girls and women aged 15-24 years old
worldwide who used a condom last time they had high-risk sex (Worldmapper Map 225)
