1. Introduction
Each day, more than 80 million barrels of oil are pumped from the Earth's surface. Of
this vast amount, the majority (~90 percent) is processed for use in fuels, which then are
combusted and released to the atmosphere in gaseous products [1]. Since sulfur constitutes up
to 5 percent of crude oils, usually as organosulfur compounds, these combustion products
include sulfur oxides and dioxides (SOx) that dissolve in atmospheric water vapor and
ultimately yield acid rain [2, 1, 3]. In addition, SOx are also believed to reduce the efficiency
