To Mrauk U
Unless you've already been granted permission in advance, the only way to/from Mrauk
U for foreigners is by boat. There are a few options.
The slowest option is the double-decker boats to Mrauk U run by the government's
In-
land Water Transport
(IWT; 043-23382)
. There's an office west of Sittwe's jetty,
though there's no need to buy tickets in advance. Ferries depart Sittwe Tuesday and Fri-
day at 8am, and return from Mrauk U on Wednesday and Saturday at 8am ($5, four to
seven hours). There's also a
private ferry service
leaving Sittwe on Monday,
Thursday and Sunday at 7am, and returning on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday at 7am ($15,
four to seven hours).
Slightly faster is a chartered
private boat
(K150,000, four to seven hours), a simple
tarp-covered boat with flat deck, a few plastic chairs and a very basic toilet. Generally a
boat can fit four to six people, with a driver who will wait at Mraul U with the boat for
two or three nights.
By far the fastest option are the 'speedboats' run by Shwe Pyi Tan (
