CURFEW
Although foreign travellers are still allowed to visit the city, the sectarian violence
that erupted in Sittwe in 2012 (

)
has had a huge impact, effectively turn-
ing the city into a predominately Burmese, quasi police state overnight. When we
were in town, Sittwe's former Muslim quarter, virtually empty, was strictly off-lim-
its, and like the town's oldest mosque, was protected by armed guards. A loosely-
enforced 10pm to 5am curfew was also in place.
