small private beach outside Gwa, approximately 30 minutes south of Kan Thar Ya.
The bungalow-style rooms are simple but stylish, and are found in an attractive
grove of coconut palms.
To reach Kan Thar Ya, hop on the daily fan-cooled bus that runs from Thandwe to
Yangon via Gwa and tell the driver to let you off at Maw Shwe Chai Resort (K12,000,
about six hours, 11am).
Eating & Drinking
A dozen or so indistinguishable seafood restaurants cluster in two strips: one running
south of Silver Beach Hotel and another running south from Sandoway Resort. All have
practically identical English-language menus and prices: a dish of crab, squid or bar-
racuda starts from K2000 or K2500, barbecued tiger prawns are K3500 to K5000, and
lobster is K15,000 and up.
There's also a strip of sand-in-your-toes-type beach restaurants between Memento Re-

gets the best reports, although it was closed when we visited during the
rainy season.
And the top-end hotel restaurants also offer a culinary alternative - particularly if
