Owned by a Yangon sea captain, this swish complex of gorgeous two-storey
cabanas and rooms (request rooms 701 and 702 for their brilliant beach views), set back
from the beach in lush gardens, is quite possibly Ngapali's most stylish. In addition to the
eponymous spa, it's also home to Ngapali's lone tennis court ($7).

The spa-
cious and well-equipped 36 double-storey villas at this resort get both rave reviews and
repeat visitors, although we weren't crazy about the rather frumpy furnishings. The re-
sort's formerly isolated location near the airport is set to change substantially due to
large-scale resort projects on either side.

The luxurious Bayview occupies a nice strip of beach, with a rare on-the-beach
bar. The 33 'bungalows' are actually linked rooms with an inviting, attractive layout,
modern amenities (TV, minibar, safe), semi-outdoor shower, lots of space, and lounge
chairs on the private deck. Guests can rent out windsurfers, kayaks and catamarans (per
hour $5 to $10).

The least stylish of the upmarket resorts, the Thande is nevertheless a pleas-
ant place to bunk, offering duplex bungalows and rooms in a two-storey building sur-
rounded by gardens, all located in a handy mid-beach location.

If Ngapali's ever-expanding resort scene is too slick for you, try
Kan Thar Ya
, an al-
most entirely undeveloped beach area 64 miles south. The sand isn't as fine as
Ngapali's, and a location between the mouths of two rivers means the water isn't
always clear, but if you've ever dreamt of having a quiet beachside town to yourself,
this is it.
