In-Depth Information
(134 Forest Rd)
This large, classically styled, if mostly modern, Chinese temple comes
complete with ornate stucco dragons, rock gardens, a vegetarian buffet restaurant, land-
scaped ponds and a seven-layered Chinese-style pagoda.
Candacraig Hotel
HISTORIC BUILDING
(Thiri Myaing Hotel; 085-22047; Anawrattha Rd; s/d $42/48)
Formerly the British Club, this
classic colonial pile comes complete with side turrets and is set in attractively manicured
gardens. There's a slightly spooky air to the place - many locals believe it's haunted -
and it sees comparatively few guests, despite the seven huge, if old-fashioned, rooms
available here. There's a restaurant but, sadly, no raj-redolent bar.
Activities
The 18-hole
Pyin Oo Lwin Golf Club
( 085-22382; Golf Club Rd; green fee $10, caddy $5,
club hire $6, shoe hire $1; 6am-6pm)
is one of Myanmar's better courses and popular
with the many army officers based in town. There's a strict dress code - collars, caps and
no jeans - and a caddie is compulsory. You can hire clubs and golf shoes.
Sleeping
Some of Pyin Oo Lwin's cheaper hotels aren't licensed to accommodate foreigners. Stay-
ing in the leafy gardens area south of the centre is a distinctively Pyin Oo Lwin experien-
ce, but consider renting a bike and you'll need a torch; the pot-holed roads get very dark
at night. Staying centrally is less atmospheric, but more convenient for transport, restaur-
ants, shops and internet cafes. Unless otherwise stated, breakfast is included in quoted
rates.
