decor in large, fully equipped rooms sporting parquet floors and fashion-neutral bath-
rooms. Price (four categories) depends on size and view. And what a view! Upper-floor
front-facing rooms look across the river towards distant Mingun, rear-upper ones over-
look the city, Mandalay Hill and the Shan uplands. Enjoy the lot, all 360 degrees, from
the rooftop bar where marionette shows are staged in season.

The most affordable of Mandalay's new boutique hotels; a great attraction of this
14-room delight is the little swimming pool part-shaded by palms. It's overlooked from
the roof terrace and the more appealing B-block, where the buttresses look almost
churchlike and the rooms have wing-doored balconies with wooden loungers. A-block
rooms are nearer the road and lack balconies.
All rooms have smart, locally flavoured decor touches and corner bathtubs. The loca-
tion is peaceful if out of the way, on a curious stretch of 14th St near the better-known
Emerald View Inn.

( 09 4025 18896, 02-61488; shwemdy 1974@gmail.com ; 60th St at 19th St; r $35; ) Attract-
ively set amid palms with a small dining terrace perched above a canal, this 10-room
'family paradise' is a cluster of relatively simple bungalow-style rooms, festooned on the
outside with bamboo patchwork designs, temple-style steps, polished stones and carved
totem-like designs. It's sweetly unique but lights could be brighter, bathrooms aren't
modern, beds are spongy and wi-fi is very limited.
