actly a steal, but the friendly service, leg room and eco-conscious vibe make Villa Inle
one of the few places on the lake where you feel like you're getting value for your
money.

and edged by fruit trees and flowers, this attractive, low-key compound is our pick of the
lot at Khaung Daing. The 38 rooms and villas are spacious, well equipped and tastefully
furnished, and all include balconies with great views over the lake.

Located on
dry land near Maing Thauk, 60 elevated bungalows and duplex villas come together in
an attractive, spacious park-like setting. The more expensive bungalows here are huge
and have wide balconies that border Inle Lake; the cheapest rooms feel rather tight and
look out over a pond. Under foreign management, the food here gets good reports.

Open
since 1996, Shwe Inn Tha has done a better job than most of Inle's lake-bound resorts at
ageing gracefully. The 38 bungalows are still in good nick, and come equipped with air-
con/heater and outdoor showers. The two 'suites' tack on TV and a dining room, while
all rooms have access to one of the lake's only pools.

50 bungalow 'suites' here are on a landscaped hillside west of Inle Lake. The home-like
rooms feel airy and sophisticated, with an extra bed on an elevated platform, huge bath-
rooms and wide balconies. There's a spa on the grounds and when we visited, another 70
bungalows were being built across the street.
