Bagan Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary Resort RESORT $$$

joint-venture hotel is located on the river, about 500m south of the Old Bagan walls. It
boasts the largest swimming pool in the Bagan area, but the rooms are mostly set in age-
ing four-room bungalow-style duplexes with covered decks and limited river views. The
restaurant is good with panoramic river views and there's a wide range of activities on
offer.

$350; ) Opened for King Edward VIII in 1922, this riverside hotel carries a bit of
dated formality and is arguably overdue a makeover. The simple 'superior' bungalows
have decks looking over the pool and nearby Gawdawpalin Pahto. Best for views,
though, are the riverfront deluxe rooms at the river's edge. Breakfast is served under the
shade of tropical trees, with a river view.

bungalows with teak floors in a nice setting. The owner runs the luxurious KMA Hotels
group, with hotels in locations from Nay Pyi Taw to Taungoo, and has a history of cosy
relations with the generals.
Eating
Old Bagan's restaurants (between the Ananda Pahto and Tharabar Gate) make for a con-
venient stop for lunch. The nearby hotel restaurants add a little style (and kyat) to a meal.
Alcohol is not served at restaurants within the Old Bagan area as they are in close prox-
imity to the temples. However, this rule does not apply to the luxury hotels and their at-
tached bars and restaurants.
