Best place to hang out with locals
Sarahba III ( Click here ; also known as Gyi Gyi's after the owner) is where the locals
come to eat, which is always a good sign. The ingredients are all market fresh and
the beef curry is amazing.
Secret spot
If I told you this, it wouldn't be a secret any moreā€¦ Try and find a small temple for
sunrise or sunset, one that is peaceful and serene, away from the crowds. There
are certainly enough temples to choose from. Avoid the most popular spots unless
you like queuing to climb the stairs.
Sleeping
Old Bagan's hotels provide views of the river, proximity to the temples and nice pool
areas, but don't necessarily offer much more comfort than you get at New Bagan's best -
and less expensive - accommodation. Definitely book ahead, as they fill up months in
advance of peak season.
All places listed have restaurants, bars and pools, plus satellite TV and extras such as a
minibar in the room. Prices listed are walk-in rates during low season, and don't include
the 10% service charge and 10% government tax, so expect some hefty surcharges at
peak times. Yangon agents or online hotel booking websites often have discounted rates
available.
