For a relatively small town, Dawei has a disproportionate amount of interesting architec-
ture, with many old wooden houses in the two-storey vernacular, with hipped rooflines
and plenty of temple-like carved wood ornamentation. Mixed in are more modest thatch-
roofed bungalows, colonial-style brick-and-stucco mansions, shophouses and offices, in-
cluding the bright green, almost church-like 1941 Division Development Committee

(Arzarni Rd) and the imposing 1928 Office of Tanintharyi Division MAP

Payagyi BUDDHIST TEMPLE
( daylight hours) The main Buddhist monastery in town, colloquially referred to
as Payagyi (Big Pagoda), is an expansive glittering, Disneyland-like compound centred
around Shwe Taung Za Paya , an immense gilded stupa.
