Despite being the administrative capital of Tanintharyi Region, the Dawei of today re-
mains a sleepy, tropical seaside town, only relatively recently connected to the rest of
Myanmar by air, road and rail. Yet Dawei's laid-back demeanour is threatened by the so-
called Dawei Project, consisting of a proposed deep-sea port and vast industrial zone.
The port would allow ships to avoid the Strait of Malacca altogether, turning the beach at
Maungmagan into what developers call the 'new global gateway of Indo-China', and the
industrial zone is touted as the largest in Southeast Asia, although at press time efforts to
fund the project had fallen flat.
