Getting There & Around
BOAT
To Yangon (deck/cabin $8/40) boats leave Wednesday and Sunday at 2pm, arriving in
Yangon the next day at 11am. Tickets must be bought with dollars only at the Inland
Water Transport Office (Mahabandoola Rd;
10am-noon) , located in a wooden colonial-
era building near the jetty.
BUS
If you're bound for Yangon (four hours), head to the informal bus company offices (Sh-
wezedi Rd) located directly east of Shwe Zin Yaw Restaurant. The cheapest air-con service
is offered six times a day by Ayer Shwe Zin (
09 4974 5191) for K3600; other operators
charge K6000.
Insanely uncomfortable minibuses ply the route from Pathein to Chaung Tha Beach
(K3000, 2½ hours, 36 miles) every two hours between 8am and 4pm, departing from an
informal bus station MAP
(Yadayagone St) a couple of blocks northeast

To Ngwe Saung Beach (K4000, two hours, 29 miles), buses leave from yet another
bus station (Strand Rd) at 9am, 11am and 3pm.
TRAIN
Pathein's train station is the terminus of a branch line from Kyankin, 61 miles south of
Pyay on the west bank of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River. During 2014 a new direct
line to Yangon is scheduled to open.
TAXI
Share taxis for up to four people can be arranged from your hotel in Pathein for Chaung
Tha (K50,000), Ngwe Saung (K40,000) and Yangon (K100,000).
Chaung Tha Beach
Travel 25 miles west of Pathein to discover the closest thing Myanmar has to a partying
beach resort. Chaung Tha is where locals head when they want to relax. There's paddling
in the water, floating about on rubber rings, plodding up and down on ponies, wasting
