In-Depth Information
( 01-666 900; www.sedonasmyanmar.com ; 1 Kaba Aye Pagoda Rd; r $100-160, ste $350-900;
) You know exactly what you'll be getting at the Singapore-owned Sedona:
peace, quiet and very professional service. What you won't be getting is any indication
you're in Myanmar, but as you sink into one of the comfortable beds, you probably
won't be that bothered.
Eating
Yangon is where you may first experience Burmese cuisine. As such, be sure to arm
yourself with a bit of culinary knowledge ( Click here ) before hitting the city's rapidly ex-
panding range of restaurants, as well as its excellent street stalls and buzzing teahouses.
It's not all about Burmese eats. Yangon has always been Myanmar's most cosmopolit-
an city and its culinary diversity reflects that. On top of all the regional styles of Myan-
mar cooking, such as Shan and Rakhine, there's a decent selection of international res-
taurants, including Thai, Japanese, Korean, French, Italian and Indian ones. You're likely
to encounter more than your fair share of Chinese (Burmese Chinese, actually) while up-
country, so unless you're a huge fan of the genre, it's worth investigating the other op-
tions.
Eat early - by 10pm all but a couple of places and a few large hotel restaurants will be
closed. In terms of value for money few of the top-end restaurants can really justifiy their
high prices.
YANGON'S STREET EATS
It doesn't take long to see that much of life in Yangon takes place on the streets.
Likewise, for the average person in Myanmar, eating at a proper restaurant is an in-
frequent extravagance and most eating is done at home or on the street.
Yangon's street-food options can be both overwhelming and challenging (pork
offal on a skewer, anyone?), so as a guide in this jungle of meals, here are some of
our favourite street eats and the best places to eat them.
Samusa thoke During the day a line of vendors (Mahabandoola Garden St, Kyauktada;
samosas K500) near Mahabandoola Park sell this 'salad' of sliced samosas served
with a thin lentil gravy.
Fruit juice Several vendors (Bogyoke Aung San Rd, Pabedan; juice from K1000;
10am-5pm) at Bogyoke Aung San Market sell refreshing fresh-squeezed juice -
don't miss the creamy avocado, sweetened with condensed milk.
