Creating a calendar of birthdays
Earlier in this chapter, I covered how to add the birthday field to your Contacts cards to keep track of this spe-
cial day for your friends, family, and even colleagues. However, you may find that you spend more time in Cal-
endar than in Contacts, so it would be nice to also add those birthdays to your calendar. You might groan at the
thought of setting up a bunch of repeating all-day events, but you don't have to. With just a few mouse clicks,
you can get Calendar to do the heavy lifting for you. Here's how:
1. Choose Calendar
→
Preferences.
The Calendar preferences appear.
2. Click the General tab.
3. Select the Show Birthdays calendar check box.
Calendar sets up a Subscriptions section in the Calendars list and adds a calendar named Birthdays, as shown in
Figure 4.14.

Sharing an iCloud calendar
There may be times when you want people to know what you're up to. For example, knowing when you have
appointments scheduled helps other folks schedule their own appointments or events. If you have an iCloud ac-
count, you can use it to share your calendar with others, which enables your friends to keep tabs on you via Cal-
endar by either viewing your calendar online using a web browser or by subscribing to your calendar (see the
next section for the specifics).
Follow these steps to share an iCloud calendar:
1. In Calendar, click the iCloud calendar you want to share.
2. Choose Edit
→
Share Calendar.
The Share Calendar dialog appears.
3. Use the Share calendar as text box to type the name under which you want your calendar shared.
