In-Depth Information
If Contacts sees that you've added a new card where the City field equals Schenectady, it automatically adds
that contact to your Smart Group.
If you edit an existing contact and change its City field to Schenectady, Contacts dutifully adds the edited
contact to the Smart Group.
If you delete a card that had Schenectady in the City field, Contacts removes the card from the Smart Group.
Now that is smart! Follow these steps to create a Smart Group:
1. Choose File New Smart Group. You can also press Option+ +N. Contacts displays a dialog so you
can define your Smart Group.
2. Use the Smart Group Name text box to type a name for the new group.
3. Use the drop-down list on the left to choose the field you want to use as the basis for your Smart
Group.
4. Use the middle drop-down list to select an operator. The operators you see depend on the field type.
5. Use the right text box to type the value you want contacts to match to qualify for membership in
the group. Figure 4.3 shows a filled-in dialog that defines a Smart Group.
4.3 Use this dialog to define your Smart Group.
6. If you want to define multiple criteria, click the Add button (+) and repeat Steps 3 to 5. Repeat as
needed.
7. If you added two or more criteria, use the Contains Cards Which Match list to choose one of the
following values:
all. Choose this if you want Contacts to include in your Smart Group only those contacts that match
every one of the criteria you added.
any. Choose this if you want Contacts to include in your Smart Group only those contacts that match at
least one of the criteria you added.
8. Click OK. Contacts adds the Smart Group to the Group column.
With your regular group or Smart Group defined, you can now blast out e-mail messages to the group in a
couple of ways:
In Mail. Start a new message and then either type the group name in the To text box or click Address, and
click and drag the group name in the Addresses window to the To field in the message.
