The presence of multiple pathways to perform the same general chemical
transformations both in the sense of derivation of energy from the breaking of
food molecules chemical bonds (catabolism) and in the opposite direction of the
actual construction by energy expenditure of complex organic molecules relevant
for the cell life (anabolism) are consistent with the existence of many possible
synthetic 'solutions' with equivalent energetic costs.
This implies that simple energetic considerations are not endowed with a
sufficiently discriminant power to guide our research toward a unique and
satisfying solution allowing us to predict the behaviour of the network when
presented with a given input. It is important to stress that this inability does not
come from a lack of knowledge of the metabolic network wiring that, at odds
with other biological networks as protein interaction networks, is very well
known, but from the often encountered difficulties in finding biologically
meaningful optimization principles for the system in a natural environment.
