Figure 8.1 reports a relatively small portion of yeast metabolic network in
which the nodes are the metabolites and the edges correspond to the presence of
one (or more) enzymes able to catalyse the chemical transformation of metabolite
i at an extreme into metabolite j at the opposite end. A well known metabolic
pathway (fatty acid biosynthesis) is reported in both a biochemical meaningful
appearance and in a synthetic graph formalization. The correspondence between
the two representations can be inferred from Table 8.1.
Fig. 8.1. The figure reports the fatty acid biosynthesis in both graph and biochemical ways of
representations (upper and lower panel). The first one is obtained using Pajek software on Ma and
Zeng database, the second one comes from KEGG database. It is worth noting that only green
labelled enzymes are present in yeast.
