In-Depth Information
It'll take a few minutes for the list of results to appear.
At this stage, installing any entry mentioned in the results list is simply a
matter of specifying its name after the SOFTWAREUPDATE -I command (specify the
name alongside the asterisk in the list—with some updates, this might simply
be a series of numbers, such as 041-0846-2.7). For example, if the list includes
an entry by the name of MACOSXUPD10.8.1-10.8.1 , the following will both download
and install it:
SUDO SOFTWAREUPDATE -I MACOSXUPD10.8.1-10.8.1
Downloading Updates
To simply download the update without installing it, use SOFTWAREUPDATE-D . Using
the same example, this will download but not install the MACOSXUPD10.8.1-10.8.1
update package:
SUDO SOFTWAREUPDATE -D MACOSXUPD10.8.1-10.8.1
To download but not install all available updates, type the following:
SUDO SOFTWAREUPDATE -D -A
You'll see a progress display as each file downloads, indicating the quantity
of the file downloaded so far and the estimated time until the download
completes.
In each case, the downloaded update packages are stored in the /LIBRARY/UPDATES
folder, and each will probably be in a numbered folder (from your Terminal
window, you can type OPEN /LIBRARY/UPDATES to browse this location more easily
in a Finder window). Each update package can be installed simply by double-
clicking it; or, if you want to remain at the command line, you can type OPEN
and specify the package name (that is, something like OPEN MACOSXUPD10.8.
1PATCH.PKG ).

Add Blank Spaces to the Dock
All the Dock icons sit next to each other and are equally spaced, but it's
possible to add spacers to the Dock so you can separate some of the icons.
You may find this helps you to avoid misclicking, for example.
