Manually Manage Software Updates
Approximately every few months, Apple updates OS X with a point release.
This is usually several hundred megabytes in size, and if you have more than
one Mac in the house, downloading the updates for each computer can put
significant strain on your Internet connection.
The command-line SOFTWAREUPDATE tool can help. This gives much more control
over the updating procedure compared to using the Mac App Store for updates,
and it allows you to download the update packages before manually installing
them. This way, you can download the updates and transfer them to other
computers using a USB memory stick.
Viewing and Installing Updates
Open a Terminal window and begin by listing what downloads are available,
as follows (typing your login password when prompted):
SUDO SOFTWAREUPDATE -L
