FIGURe 9.3 Applying a Color Overlay effect in the Layer Style
dialog box
6. Toggle off the Background layer containing the black line drawing
and the white background pixels. The areas you filled went inside the
lines by one pixel. Hold the Cmd key and click the Octagram layer
thumbnail to select all the pixels on this layer.
7. Choose Select a Modify a Expand. Type 1 in the Expand Selection
dialog box and click OK.
8. Choose Edit a Fill, select Black from the Use drop-down in the Fill
dialog box, and click OK. Press Cmd+D to deselect all.
You don't have to fill
with color #555555
because this color
is managed by the
Color Overlay effect,
not the actual pixels
on the Octagram
layer.
9. Double-click just to the right of the word Octagram in the Layers
panel. (This is a shortcut to open the Layer Style dialog box.) Select
the words Inner Shadow (rather than their check box) to simulta-
neously enable the effect and switch to the effect's page within the
Layer Style dialog box. Drag the Distance slider to 15 px and the Size
slider to 35 px. Select Use Global Light and set the angle by dragging
the circular control to 123° (see Figure 9.4). Click OK.
10. Save the file as Digital-Art-1.psd and leave it open as you work
through the remainder of this exercise. Figure 9.5 shows the
Octagram layer's Color Overlay and Inner Shadow effects. The inner
shadow makes it seem like the affected areas are cut into the canvas.
