should suit many of your needs. You will also learn to adjust brush parameters to
have them work exactly the way you want them to.
opacity and Flow
Opacity and Flow are parameters on the options bar that control how paint
comes off the brush. You will experiment with them in the following steps.
1. Press Cmd+N to create a new document. In the New dialog box, select
Web from the Preset drop-down menu and 800 n 600 from the Size
drop-down. Click OK.
2. Open the Color panel and choose a dark-red color by dragging along
the color strip.

3. Press B for brush and open the Brush Preset picker on the options
bar. Select the 59-pixel Spatter brush.
hold the cursor still
over a preset brush
for a few seconds to
display its name in a
tooltip.
4. Reduce Flow on the options bar to 10%. Painting with reduced flow
allows you to build up paint in successive strokes.
5. Make a few brushstrokes on the canvas that overlap in one area. You
can perceive what appear to be individual hairs in the brush because
of the brush's scattered shape. Paint is more saturated where the
brushstrokes overlap because of the reduced flow.
6. Set Opacity to 10% and Flow to 100% on the options bar. Make a few
more brushstrokes and observe how reducing the opacity makes the
paint appear like a wash (paint mixed with water). Opacity builds
where brushstrokes overlap. Figure 4.18 shows the result.
