The Fixed Effect Model screen.
In the navigation panel at the left of the screen, select Fixed Effect
Model. In the Class and quantitative window, select Time_Recode and
then select the Main pushbutton; Time_Recode will automatically appear
in the Effects window as shown in Figure 10.20.
In the navigation panel at the left of the screen, select Fixed Effect
Model Options. Select Type 3 under Hypothesis test type , Residual
maximum likelihood under Estimationmethod (this is the default), and
Betweenandwithinsubject portions under Degreesof freedommethod .
This is illustrated in Figure 10.21.
Selecting the RandomEffects tab in the navigation tab brings you to the
blank initial screen shown in Figure 10.22. Click the Add pushbutton and
two displays will be presented. First, the expression

will appear in the Random effects to estimate panel. Second, several
panels in the Random effects and options panel will become available.
This is shown in Figure 10.23.
Our goal in this window is to specify our subid variable as a random
effect and to register that this is the way we have identified our subjects
in the data file. A random effect is associated with an independent variable
whose levels are not systematically manipulated by the researchers or
which are the results of the sampling plan. We typically wish to generalize
beyond the specific levels present in the research to a wider population of
