In-Depth Information
Elements users don't have to be content with using the brush tips supplied with the program. They can create
their own brush tip designs by either changing the characteristics of an existing brush or using an image as the
basis of a new one. In this example both the holly and bow patterns have been created using custom brushes.

Custom brush creation
In the more recent releases of Photoshop Elements, Adobe has included a sophisticated
Brush engine that, when combined with the program's ability to make a brush tip from
almost any image, allows the user unlimited drawing options to play with.
There are two basic approaches to creating a new brush. The first involves selecting an ex-
isting preset and then modifying the brush's characteristics before saving the altered brush
as a new brush entry. The second approach uses an image as the basis for the shape, texture
and design of the brush tip. In creating the card example you see here, custom Holly and
Ribbon Bow brushes were used to decorate the front and inside faces of the card.
The Brush Settings pane
contains a range of options
that can be used to alter
the characteristics of exist-
ing brush tips.
