2 Basic Game Mode and Common Editor Tools
According to characteristics, currently various popular online games can be divided
into four types according to operation mode, namely real-time strategy, first person
shooter, virtual world or role playing and card games. The role in games of different
mode has different behaviors. For example, in real-time strategy game, the role has
behaviors of movement in all directions, patrolling, defense, attack, picking up things,
upgrade and add some other acts. In the first-person shooter, there are behaviors of
forward, backward, left and right shift, jump, switch weapons, run, walk, buy weap-
ons, fire and 360-degree angle conversion. In the card games, the role has behaviors
of waiting and acting. In the virtual world games, the role has behaviors of move
around, 360-degree angle conversion, jump and talk with other players, trading, up-
grades, building equipment, and other acts. In these basic modes, behaviors of role
in virtual world games not only includes basic behaviors of former three types, but
also has broad social participation to best meet people's emotional needs. So it is
the most attractive game mode. Therefore, design idea of virtual world game can be
introduced into distance education to construct more attractive online knowledge
learning system.
A successful game edition involves many aspects. It not only needs wonderful plot
and level design by game planners, but also role and scene design by art staff. It also
needs program developers to design based on game engine. Completion of game
needs many tools.
(1) Scene editor to create game scenarios to accommodate interaction of players.
Tools as SceneEditor, 3DMAX, ShadowEditor, MagicGearEditor3D, Photo-
shop CS are used to create, place or modify natural terrain such as mountains,
rivers, or man-made terrain such as housing, roads, or other similar things, such
as space in the game like planets.
(2) Task editor. Task is also called barriers or risks, which includes a series of
works to achieve a target. Task editor usually needs to set task return condi-
tions, design traps and NPC triggers when players try to complete the task as
well as that used for tracking time-limited tasks. The task editor includes
Pitrunner, Blade of Darkness and so on.

to insert sound into action trigger or edit background sound. Any places need
sound will be completed by trigger.
