This appendix explains how to install the three software applications used in this
text: the Java™ 2 Software Development Kit (SDK), which provides the tools to
compile and execute Java programs; the text editor software, TextPad, which
provides an environment to create and modify programs; and Tomcat, which
provides the server software needed to run servlets and JavaServer Pages™ (JSP).
These resources are available free at their respective Web sites, as well as on the
CD-ROM that accompanies this text. To install this software on your computer
system, you must be logged in to an account or system that gives you the
authority to make the necessary modifications to the environment.
