Härnösand

Once a pre-Viking trading post on the island of Härnön, Härnösand was burned to the
ground three times in the 1700s: once when drunken churchgoers set the place on fire by
accident, once by schoolboy pranksters, and once when Russian Cossacks flattened it in
1721. Härnösand's Storatorget (main square) is lined with attractive neoclassical 18th-cen-
tury buildings, and its pretty harbour fills up with yachts in July when Härnösand celeb-
rates its maritime heritage.
