In-Depth Information
Länsmuseet Västernorrland ( www.murberget.se ; 11am-4pm) showcases historic pho-
tographs and Sami handicraft, while equally interesting temporary offerings may include a
study of Sweden's attitudes to witchcraft and evil forces, and spectacular weddings dresses
as part of a 'here-comes-the-bride-through-the-ages' display. The adjacent open-air mu-
seum, Murberget ( www.murberget.se ; Varvsallén; 11am-4pm ) , is the second largest of its
kind in Sweden and features over 80 wooden buildings from Ångermanland from the 18th
century onwards. Among the traditional farmhouses, 19th-century inn, smithy, church and
school in the style typical of this part of Norrland, you'll find Rysstugan, the only building
to survive the marauding Russians. The museums are a 30-minute walk from the centre, or
take bus 2 or 52 from Nybrogatan near the Rådhuset.
Directly across the street from the cathedral is a restored wooden building from 1844
that houses the original STF Mitti Härnösand ( 0611-243 00; www.mittiharnosand.com ;
Franzengatan 14 ; hostel dm/s/d from Skr150/300/400, hotel s/d from Skr545/695; reception
8-10am & 3-5pm; ) . The facilities are more modern at Köpmangatan 7 (where, incid-
entally, the reception is located). 'Hotel' rooms are hostel rooms, with bed linen, towels and
breakfast included. A more refined option is First Hotel Stadt (
0611-55 44 40;
www.firsthotels.se ; Skeppsbron 9; s/d from Skr840/1040;
) , with its harbourside location
and Scandinavian-modern rooms.
Run by a hardworking owner, Kanal Café & Restaurang ( www.kanalcafeet.se ; Storgatan
18; mains Skr109-249; 11am-10pm) has a loyal local following, thanks to dishes such as hot-
smoked salmon with house mayo, pepper steak 'Fidel Castro style' and tapas platters made
for sharing. Located in a darkly atmospheric 19th-century timber building, Vägg i Vägg (
0611-247 45; www.vaggivagg.com ; Brunnshusgatan1 ; mains Skr175-235; 6pm-late Tue-Sat)
caters to a largely carnivorous clientele. Their offerings range from homemade bacon-and-
jalapeño hamburgers and expertly seared steaks to Swedish tapas combos.
The tourist office ( 0611-881 40; www.harnosand.se ; Storatorget 2; 9am-6pm Mon-Fri,
10am-3pm Sat & Sun Jun-Aug) is located on the main square and sells guides to the Höga
Kusten.
Buses 100 and 201 run to Sundsvall (Skr94, 45 minutes, roughly hourly), buses 100 and
10 serve Umeå (Skr263, three to 4¼ hours, six daily). Ybuss runs daily to Gävle (Skr285,
3¾ hours, up to six daily) and Stockholm (Skr349, 5½ to seven hours, up to six daily).
