Varberg
0340 / Pop 27, 602
The 19th-century bathing resort of Varberg lies by the side of a 60km stretch of beautiful
white-sand beaches: its population triples in the summer months. The town's sights, res-
taurants and hotels are largely clustered around its other main attraction, its fortress.
Sights & Activities
Varberg Fortress
CASTLE
( www.lansmuseet.varberg.se ; adult/under 20yr Skr120/free; 10am-6pm daily mid-Jun-mid-Aug)
Varberg's star attraction is this imposing medieval prison fortress overlooking the sea. Its
museum is home to the 14th-century Bocksten Man, a garrotted, impaled and drowned
murder victim, dug out of a peat bog at Åkulle in 1936. His 14th-century costume is the
most perfectly preserved medieval clothing in Europe and his full head of red-blond hair is
intact. You can also delve into the still-unsolved mystery of King Karl XII's murder.
Nudist Beaches
BEACH
Varberg has three nudist beaches just a short walk south from the fortress along the Strand-
promenaden. Don't expect white sand; these beaches all consist of large, smooth rocks, all
with easy access to the water. Beaches are segregated by gender: the first two, Kär-
ringhålan and Skarpe Nord, are women-only beaches; a few minutes further south is Goda
Hopp, the men's bathing spot.
Getterön Nature Reserve
NATURE RESERVE
Getterön Nature Reserve is just 2km north of the town and its abundant bird life (mostly
waders and geese) attracts twitchers.
