WORTH A TRIP
LOVELY LÆSØ
The appeal of the island of Læsø (population 1840) lies in its ability to stay firmly en-
trenched in the past. It may be just 28km off the coast of Frederikshavn, but it seems 100
years in arrears. It's home to small farms, sandy beaches, heathlands, dunes, much-loved
traditions and charming small communities.
Island tradition continues in the making of Læsø salt. At one time an island export, the
salt is now sold in small souvenir bags and is respected for its medicinal qualities as well
as its gourmet potential. On the island you can visit the saltworks , and take a salt bath at
Læsø Kur ( 98 49 13 22; www.saltkur.dk ; Vesterø Havnegade 28), a wellness centre inside a
former church.
The island has a few small towns (Vesterø Havn, Byrum and Østerby Havn), a couple of
medieval churches, and a smattering of museums (including a seaweed-roofed farm mu-
seum). South of the main island is Rønnerne , an area of tidal wetlands with extensive
seaside meadows and heathland, impressive birdlife and unique flora and fauna.
DAY TRIPS TO LÆSØ
A good way to experience Læsø is by day trip from Frederikshavn, departing on the
7.50am ferry and landing at Vesterø Havn. There are four options, all outlined on the ferry
company's website ( www.laesoe-line.dk ) . These include a bus tour of major sights, a self-
guided cycling tour, a tractor-pulled cart ride into Rønnerne with a nature guide, or a seal-
watching boat ride. The day trips cost between Dkr255 and Dkr400, including return ferry
passage (if you're staying on the island you can also join the tours and pay a lower rate).
STAYING ON LÆSØ
The tourist office ( 98 49 92 42; www.visitlaesoe.dk ; Vesterø Havnegade 17; 9am-3pm Mon-
Fri, to 2pm Sat & Sun mid-Jun-Aug, shorter hrs rest of yr) is 300m east of the ferry terminal and
can help organise holiday cottages around the island; book in advance for July and
August.
There are plenty of small hotels and a Danhostel. We're fond of the idyllic beachside
Strandgaarden Badehotel ( 98 49 90 35; www.badehotel.eu ; Strandvejen 8; d without/with
bathroom from Dkr800/1150, incl breakfast), pretty as a picture under its thatched roof, and
with beds for most budgets plus bike hire and an excellent restaurant.
