If you've come to expect restrained Scandi style in your top-end Danish hotels, prepare to
be surprised. From the over-the-top entrance portico to the chandelier-lit reception area
and incredible murals, the Royal seems a little, well, gaudy in parts. But fun, too - we love
the fish-tank reception desk and the rich colour schemes. The rooms are appropriately lav-
ish.
Eating
Away from the same-same feeling you may get along Åboulevarden, fertile hunting
grounds come dinnertime include the Latin Quarter (good for bistro-style cafes); Mejlgade
(home to some excellent budget options); and the cool Frederiksbjerg neighbourhood,
south of the train station (centred on MP Bruuns Gade and Jægergårdsgade).

You may need to fight for one of the sought-after tables at Oli Nico, a small deli-restaurant
with a menu of classic dishes at astoundingly good prices ( moules frites for Dkr60, rib-eye
steak for Dkr125 - both with homemade chips!). The daily-changing three-course dinner
menu (for a bargain Dkr130) may be Aarhus' best-kept food secret. No reservations;
takeaway available.
