Getting There & Away
Odense is 44km northwest of Svendborg and 50km east of the bridge to Jutland.
BUS
Long-distance buses ( rutebiler ) to destinations beyond Funen leave from Dannebrogsgade,
at the rear of the train station. FynBus ( 63 11 22 00; www.fynbus.dk ) runs bus services in
Funen, within Odense and to/from all major towns on the island - these buses generally ar-
rive and depart from stops directly behind the Odense Banegård Center. Information is on-
line (mostly in Danish), or via the bus station info desk, staffed from 9.30am to 5pm
Monday, to 4pm Tuesday to Friday.
Key destinations, with frequent services (at least hourly) include Faaborg (Dkr71, one
hour) and Kerteminde (Dkr41, 40 minutes). To reach Svendborg, take the train.
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
The cross-country E20 motorway from Copenhagen to Esbjerg (west-coast Jutland) runs
south of Odense, with plenty of exits indicated.
TRAIN
There's a ticket office ( 7am-6pm Mon-Fri, 9am-4pm Sat, 10am-6pm Sun) on the 2nd floor
of the train-station complex, and plenty of automatic machines.
Odense is accessible by the main railway line between Copenhagen (Dkr276, 1½ hours,
at least hourly), Aarhus (Dkr240, 1¾ hours, at least hourly) and Esbjerg (Dkr218, 1½
hours, hourly).
Trains between Odense and Copenhagen stop at Nyborg (Dkr53, 15 minutes). The only
other train route in Funen is the half-hourly run between Odense and Svendborg (Dkr78,
40 minutes).
Getting Around
BICYCLE
Odense is a delight to explore by bike, especially along the many riverside bike paths. The
tourist office has free cycling maps.
The city council runs an extensive bike-share scheme - if you don't have a Danish mo-
bile phone, you need to register online with your creditcard details, then use your mobile
