A veritable institution, Schønnemann has been lining bellies with smørrebrød (open sand-
wiches) and schnapps since 1877. Originally a hit with farmers in town peddling their pro-
duce, the restaurant's current fan base includes revered chefs like Noma's René Redzepi.
Two smørrebrød per person should suffice, with standouts including the King's Garden
(potatoes with smoked mayonnaise, fried onions, chives and tomato). Make sure to order
both a beer and a glass of schnapps to wash down the goodness, and always book ahead
(or head in early) to avoid long lunchtime waits.

The Royal Library's ground-floor cafe delivers a short menu of cheap, fresh bites, with one
soup, a couple of salads and sandwiches, and no shortage of naughty cakes and pastries for
a mid-afternoon high. The coffee is good and the harbourside deckchairs are a top spot to
soak up some rays on those sunny summer afternoons.
