Stalheim Hotel HISTORIC HOTEL
(
56 52 01 22; www.stalheim.com ; s/d/superior from Nkr1160/1750/2150;
mid-May-mid-Sep;
)
Arguably Norway's most spectacularly sited hotel, this large '60s place has simple, spa-
cious rooms, around half of which have glorious views (room 324, in particular, once fea-
tured in Conde Nast Traveler's 'best rooms with a view'). The stunning lounge, lobby and
dining hall are filled with a truly exceptional collection of Norwegian mid-century design
and historical paintings.
Despite the onslaught of tour groups during the day, the friendly staff and elegant owner
maintain a sense of calm. The buffets at lunch (Nkr250) and dinner (Nkr450) are lavish, or
there is an a la carte menu (mains Nkr245); meals work out cheaper on half-board rates.
Getting There & Away
To reach Stalheim from Voss, take any bus (Nkr101, one hour, four to 11 daily) towards
the towns of Gudvangen and Aurland, but you may have to hike 1.3km up from the main
road unless you can persuade the bus driver to make the short detour.
Myrdal
Between the towns of Voss and Finse, Myrdal is the junction of the Oslo-Bergen railway
and the spectacularly steep Flåmsbana railway; it's also a famous stop on the Norway in a
Nutshell tour. From here, the dramatic Flåmsbana line twists 20km down to Flåm on Aur-
landsfjorden, an arm of Sognefjorden.
