In-Depth Information
HARDANGERFJORD
Running from the Atlantic to the steep wall of central Norway's Hardangervidda Plateau,
Hardangerfjord is classic Norwegian fjord country. There are many beautiful corners, al-
though our picks would take in Eidfjord, Ulvik and Utne, while Folgefonna National Park
offers glacier walks and top-level hiking. You can easily explore Hardangerfjord from Ber-
gen; www.hardangerfjord.com is a good resource.
Norheimsund
Pop 2224
Tranquil Norheimsund serves as the gateway to Hardangerfjord. There are more beautiful
places further into the fjord network, but it's a pretty little town nonetheless. Ferries from
here head to Eidfjord, making it a useful staging post if you're travelling on public transport.

Steinsdalfossen WATERFALL
Just 1km west of Norheimsund along Rv7, this 50m-high waterfall is a far cry from Nor-
way's highest, but it does offer the chance to walk behind the water. It can get overcrowded
with tour buses in summer; inexplicably, this is one of the most visited natural sites in Nor-
way.
Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter MUSEUM
( 47 47 98 39; www.fartoyvern.no ; adult/child Nkr90/50; 10am-5pm early May-early Sep)
This engaging museum keeps alive the local boat-building tradition and is home to old
wooden boats, exhibitions on restoration procedures and rope-making, as well as temporary
exhibitions. Children can try their hand at building a boat and other maritime skills. The
museum also offers three daily 2.5-hour cruises on the fjord in a restored cutter (mid-June
to mid-August; adult/child Nkr330/165).
