Basic and bright rooms occupy the ground floor of this traditional house in a peaceful, el-
evated neighbourhood that's close to everything. Good-quality beds and down duvets, a
heated bathroom floor and guest kitchen make it very good value.

The Citybox mini-chain began in Bergen and is one of the best of the hostel-budget hotel
hybrids. Colour-splashed modern rooms make use of the original historic features and are
blissfully high-ceilinged; the extra large family rooms are very generous in size and have
small kitchen areas. Communal spaces, including a shared laundry room, can be hectic, but
staff are friendly and helpful.

Gone are the days when staying in a hostel meant a long hike into town: this friendly place
could be Norway's most central budget choice. While it's a standard hostel - same-sex or
mixed dorms, large kitchen facilities etc - the terrace is extraordinary and staff are great.
Bookings are essential year-round and, unusually, bed linen is included in the price.

This lakeside campsite 20km from town, between Espeland and Haukeland, is accessible
