OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
CITY CABIN
Tubakuba CABIN
( GOOGLE MAP )
Bergen's most unique accommodation option also happens to be free. This forest cabin
was built by architecture students using experimental wood-moulding techniques. It's
Norwegian design exemplified: pared back, purposeful, organic and sensual. Designed to
help families with young children get back into nature, the cabin has no water or electri-
city but provides the shelter and warmth that a tent can't.
It's an easy walk here south-east of the Fløibanen funicular top station, and the site has
the spectacular cliffside views you might imagine. Tubakuba is available in July and
August for stays of one night only. Bookings can be made via the Bergen Kommune of-
fice (
55 56 62 09; www.bergen.kommune.no ), where you also 'check-in' and pick up the
keys.
Sleeping
Bergen has good hotels, but always book before arriving in town; the city fills up fast in
summer and for festivals, but also sells out for hard-to-anticipate events and conferences
year-round.
The tourist office has an accommodation booking service both online and onsite.
Marken Gjestehus HOSTEL

Midway between the harbour and the train station, this hostel-within-a-hotel has simple,
modern rooms. White walls and wooden floors lend a sense of light and space, bright
chairs and wall decals are cheery, and the communal areas are more stylish than you'd ex-
pect for the price.
