In-Depth Information
This golf course straddles Finland and Sweden, allowing you to fire shots into a different
country and time zone. There are various group discounts; there's also a driving range and
pitch 'n' putt course (adult/child €10/5).
Sleeping
There's a better choice of accommodation across the border in Haparanda, where the Stad-
shotell ( 0922 614 90; www.haparandastadshotell.se ; Torget 7;s/d Skr1375/1610;
) and a
couple of hostels offer good accommodation on the main square.
Camping Tornio CAMPGROUND
( GOOGLE MAP ; 016-445-945; www.campingtornio.com ; Matkailijantie 9;tent sites €12 plus per
adult/child €4/2, cabins €38-52; May-Sep; )
About 3km from the town centre, off the road to Kemi, this has a very pleasant grassy
riverside location. It also offers boat and bike hire, tennis and a beach.
Kaupunginhotelli HOTEL
( GOOGLE MAP ; 0400-105-800; www.tch.fi ; Itäranta 4;s/d €116/131; )
Tornio's only hotel could do with an injection of cash, optimism or both, but has decent fa-
cilities. Rooms are spacious with natural light but the furniture would benefit from a refit.
In July and on weekends a room is €98.
E-City GUESTHOUSE
( GOOGLE MAP ; 044-509-0358; www.ecity.fi ; Saarenpäänkatu 39;s/d €75/90, without bathroom
€60/75; )
This friendly, clean but no-frills guesthouse is a 15-minute walk from central Tornio near
the river. Some things could do with a tweak, but the comfortable, colourful rooms are
fine. Shared bathrooms have decent showers, and breakfast includes traditional Finnish
porridge.
Eating
There is little eating choice. In Haparanda, the Stadshotell has a quality restaurant.
