In-Depth Information
The thrill starts just 300m after Juuma, with the class II Niskakoski. From here on, it's
busy. Myllykoski, with a watermill, is a tricky class IV waterfall. Right after Myllykoski,
the 900m class IV Aallokkokoski rapids mean quick paddling for quite some time. The
Jyrävä waterfall comes right after this long section. Pull aside and carry your canoe; you
might want to carry it from Myllykoski to beyond Jyrävä, skipping Aallokkokoski alto-
gether.
After Jyrävä things cool down considerably, although there are some class III rapids.
When you meet the Oulankajoki, 13km further downriver, paddle upriver to Jäkälämutka
or downriver to Kuusinkiniemi, by the border zone. Arrange return transport from these re-
mote points in advance.
Juuma
08
Juuma is a popular base for Karhunkierros treks and canoeing on the Kitkajoki.
The Pieni Karhunkierros (Little Bear's Ring) is an easy-to-moderate 12km loop trail
taking in some fantastic scenery as it follows the river valley far below. It leaves from by
the Retki-Etappi cafe and traverses varying terrain; wet bits are all boardwalked. It's one of
the most scenic short routes in Finland. There's a wilderness hut on this trail - Siilastupa -
and a day hut at Myllykoski. It's well signposted, and busy. You can do it with snowshoes
in winter.
