Right by the water, this is an upbeat place with rooms airily kitted out in light wood. The
'small' rooms live up to their name: it's worth upgrading to the spacious other categories,
some of which have marvellous views. The suites are wonderful spaces with curving pic-
ture windows. The restaurant-cafe has a summer lunch buffet and great sea views.

This main office is at Marjaniemi, but you can get a map and information in nearly all the
island's cafes and spots of interest.
Getting There & Around
Bus 59 travels one to three times daily from Oulu, running the length of the island to Mar-
janiemi (€7.40, 1½ hours). Free ferries ( www.finferries.fi ) make the half-hour journey half-
hourly to hourly. The ferry is 28km southwest of Oulu via Rd 816. In winter there's an ice
road to the island.
Liminganlahti
The bird sanctuary at Liminka Bay attracts numerous avian species, with several rare
waders nesting here during summer, and many species of waterfowl and birds of prey also
visible. Prominent species include the yellow-breasted bunting, black-tailed godwit, Ural
owl, bittern, marsh harrier and tern. There are several observation towers, boardwalks and
a couple of designated campsites.
Head first for Liminganlahden Luontokeskus ( 040-832-1781; www.liminganlahti.fi ;
Rantakurvi 6; 10am-6pm Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm Sat & Sun Apr-May, weekdays only Jun-early Aug) , a
well-equipped nature centre 6km west of Liminka village. Accommodation is available:
call 0400-565-040 outside of centre opening hours.
Several daily Raahe-bound buses make the 30km trip from Oulu to Liminka and on to
Lumijoki, and will stop at the turn-off to the nature centre.
