Turkansaari is 14km east of Oulu off Rd 22; catch bus 41. You can also get there by
boat from town in summer. Entry is free with the Pohjois Pohjanmaan Museo ticket.

A favourite Oulu beach escape, Hailuoto is a sizeable island of traditional red farmhouses,
venerable wooden windmills, modern wind farms, and pines growing tall from the sandy
soil.
The road winds 30km from the ferry slip to the beach at Marjaniemi at the island's op-
posite end.
In the middle, Hailuoto village has services, a striking A-frame church and Kniivilä
(Marjaniementie 20, Hailuoto;adult/child €2/1; 11am-5pm late Jun-late Aug) , an open-air mu-
seum of old wooden buildings.
At Marjaniemi, there's a shallow-water beach perfect for kids, looked over by a light-
house (adult/child €5/3; noon-2pm Jul) . At the base is Luototalo, which contains a free
nature exhibition ( 11am-5pm) on the dune ecosystem.

In Hailuoto, the 'Blue Bike Inn' is a handsome complex of wooden farm buildings in a
tranquil setting. Three pretty rooms share a bathroom above a cafe, while summer-only
rooms are also available in the barn. Breakfast costs €8.

At Marjaniemi beach, with cabins within striking distance of the sea and sand-gravel tent
