TRAIN
Several direct trains run daily to Helsinki (€77 to €94, six to eight hours). There are also
trains via Kajaani and trains north to Rovaniemi.
Getting Around
There's a good network of local buses ( www.oulunjoukkoliikenne.fi ) . Each ride costs
€3.30; check route maps online and at bus stops. Bus 9 goes to the airport every 30
minutes (€4.70, 25 minutes).
Bicycles can be hired from Pyörä-Suvala ( GOOGLE MAP ; 08-338-175;
www.pyorasuvala.fi ;Lekatie 2;per hour/day/24hr/week €5/12/15/42; 9am-6pm Mon-Fri,
10am-2pm Sat) - ask for a better one if you don't like the yellow hire ones - and from the
Nallikari campground, which also hires out skis in winter.
The various car-hire operators in town, including Sixt ( www.sixt.com ) at the airport and
Budget ( GOOGLE MAP ; 020-746-6640; www.budget.fi ; Kaarnatie 10) , do cheap weekend
deals.
Around Oulu
The zoo at Ranua is an easy day trip from Oulu.
Turkansaari
Set across two river islands on the scenic Oulujoki, this open-air museum ( www.ouka.fi/
ppm ;Turkansaarentie 165;adult/child €4/2; 10am-6pm late May-mid-Aug, to 4pm mid-Aug-mid-
Sep) is a collection of wooden buildings of various traditional types, from loggers' cabins
to stables, and includes a handsome traditional farmhouse. The 1694 church is an original
from this former trading settlement. A working tar pit comes to the fore during Tar-Burn-
ing Week , a festival in late June.
