Over 70 Karelian buildings and open-air exhibits at this outdoor museum are organised by
century or trade (such as farming, milling, fire-fighting). A fascinating insight into the
forestry industry includes a look at a logging camp and floating rafts and machinery used
for harvest and transport.
In winter the only section open is the indoor museum ( 040-104-4151; www.lieksa.fi/
museo ;admission winter adult/child €3/1; 10am-3pm Tue-Fri mid-Sep-mid-May) featuring pho-
tographs and displays on Karelian history.
Activities
Karelia Expert can book most trips and activities and provides detailed driving instructions
for out-of-the-way operators; pick-ups from Lieksa for whitewater rafting trips in the
Ruunaa Recreation Area can be arranged.
Lake Pielinen, Pudasjoki River and the Ruunaa and Änäkäinen have great recreational
fishing areas. Each requires a separate permit, available from local sports shops, such as
Lieksan Retkiaitta ( 040-017-2226;Pielisentie 33) , or Karelia Expert.
Erä Eero BEAR-WATCHING

Erä Eero runs awesome overnight trips to its observation cabin, where you may see bears,
wolves and beavers between April and October, as well as birds of prey, wolverines and
lynx.
