The closest town to the Russian border, Ilomantsi has an Orthodox religion and its own
dialect. There are a handful of interesting sights here, but with little worthwhile accom-
modation (the main 'hotel', Pääskynpesä, is primarily a rehabilitation centre, which does
not make for a holiday atmosphere) and few eating options, you're better off visiting for
just a day and then heading for the national parks and scenic areas beyond.
