MAINLAND ÅLAND & AROUND
Several large islands form Åland's core. Some of Finland's oldest historical landmarks are
in this region, particularly around Saltvik and Sund. Eckerö in the west is serviced by reg-
ular ferries to/from Grisslehamn, Sweden.
CYCLING THE MAIL ROAD
A good taster for cycling in the archipelago is the Mail Rd, a former postal route
( www.aland.com ;admission €3; 10am-3pm early Jun-mid-Aug) that crossed Åland between
Stockholm and Turku. Today it has been transformed into a 65km cycling route, marked
by red poles, that takes you from Eckerö to Värdö via some of the island's biggest sights
including Kastelholms Slott and Bomarsund.
Allow a gentle two days - three if cycling with kids. There are accommodation and eat-
ing options along the way; pick up a free copy ofMail Road Across Ålandfrom the tourist
office.
Jomala

You'll see Jomala's coat of arms, which features an enthroned St Olaf, Åland's patron
saint, around its two main centres: Kyrkby and smaller Gottby. Two kilometres west of
Gottby and 4km off the main road, the peaceful hamlet of Djurvik overlooks a gentle bay.
